This is the first book review I have ever written. I am an avid reader and love Christian fiction of all kinds. I can’t ever remember starting a book, and then deciding I do not want to finish it, even ones I have not really liked. That is exactly what happened with Sex in the Sanctuary. Small issues were that I found the dialect difficult to follow, but that is only because it is not familiar to me. I am not an uptight Christian who balks at “sex”, but the book provided a little more information than I wanted to know.
What made me stop reading was the crudeness of Maxine’s comments about white women. A very derrogatory phrase was used that I have never even heard (referring to a womens “privates”) and if a similar term had been used about a black women in a Christian novel there would be all kinds of backlash! I understand the point of the book is not to promote harmoney between races, but the comment “Those hussies are always after our Black men. They got everything else, now they want them, too!” is not only a gross exaggeration but does not place any accountabiblty on black men.
I obvioustly don’t understand the plight of black women, but I would have liked to learn more about their struggles, most of which are common among women of all races, without feeling like white women are the enemy.
I would not reccommend this book and don’t plan to pass it on to any of my white OR black friends.

I was really disappointed with this book to the extent that I had to return it the store. The story telling was dry and unimaginative. The pacing is TEDIOUS. I didn’t find any of these characters endearing and after a while I just didn’t care.

It’s been a while since I have taken time to read a novel. Our pastors talk about this subject at church and give quite vivid examples. I enjoyed this novel because it verified a lot of what my pastors say. I even had a friend that once left home to marry a man that had shown her little interest if any, so I sort of felt Millicent. This may have been a fictional piece of work but this could be a true story. I am so interested in King that I went back and purchased the rest of the series just to see if he would remain faithful. Tai let me know that in the right situation you can forgive. My problem is how do I forget? Will she always have her guard up?

Sex and the Sanctuary was a pretty good read. Some parts dragged on and could have probably been left out. That Millicent was a trip and I can’t wait to read the sequel. I hope she is in it. She is a character that cannot be forgotten.
