Makes some of the hard to understand subjects of today a little easier to grasp.

I apparently did not enjoy this book as much as the other reviewers here. At the beginning of the book the author praises Michael Moore among others – this was a fair warning. The author also warns that he does not make use of citations for the sources of his information or statistics. The book is really mostly a rant against conservatives in political power. It might be justified in a lot of cases – anti stem cell research, anti sex education, etc, but I really didn’t feel like I was learning much by reading it. I already know that there a religious zealots standing in the way of science just like I’m sure that the left would gladly spend our resources on federal vote purchasing programs (entitlements) instead of spending it on science. The tone of the writing is a bit snide and felt condescending at times. The opening chapter is devoted to helping us understand just how hard it is to be a researcher, as opposed to being just an MD or something else. This book just rubbed me the wrong way – I don’t need an author to tell me how stupid something is, just tell me the facts and I can figure out the rest.

This book may be advertised as a polemic, but it actually provides straight common sense where it’s most needed. In a political era where ideology often takes second place to facts, Stebbins lays the science bare on a host of controversial issues–from stem cells to genetic testing. You might not always agree with him, but he’ll definitely get you thinking.

Doctor Mike Rocks! I urge you to read this book. The Dr. lays it out there, whether you know anything about science or not it doesn’t matter – you will after reading this book. It’s funny and really terrifying at the same time. A tell all, hard-and-slamming-clash between the myths, truths and politics behind the world of science. I couldn’t put it down, bought three copies for friends. Brilliant piece of work!!
